As the excavator hydraulic bucket cylinder extends, it pushes the bucket away from the arm, lifting and opening the bucket. When it retracts, the bucket closes and moves towards the excavator arm.

When hydraulic fluid enters one chamber of the cylinder, it exerts pressure on that side of the piston. This force causes the piston rod to extend or retract, moving the excavator bucket accordingly.

The hydraulic fluid pressure and the cylinder’s specifications determine the amount of force it can exert to lift and tilt heavy loads. Larger cylinders provide higher digging force for excavating heavy material.

Main 2 Types Of Bucket Cylinders

There are two main types of bucket cylinders:

Single Acting Cylinders:

  • Have hydraulic fluid on one side of the piston only.
  • Require a mechanical spring to return the piston to its original position after each stroke.
  • Are usually cheaper but provide less power and slower cycles.

Double Acting Cylinders:

  • Have hydraulic fluid on both sides of the piston.
  • Allow the piston to move in both directions by pressurizing either side.
  • Provide more power, faster cycles and better controllability.
  • Are typically used on larger excavators for greater digging force.

Bucket Cylinder Consisted By Many Components

The main parts of an excavator bucket cylinder are:

  • The barrel forms the outer hollow cylindrical housing containing the internal mechanisms.
  • The piston, fitting tightly inside the barrel, divides it into two chambers while being able to move within it.
  • The rod extends from the piston and is connected to the bucket, allowing it to move in and out as the piston moves.
  • The seals, in the form of O-rings, prevent hydraulic fluid from escaping past the piston.
  • The mounting brackets attach the cylinder to both the arm and bucket of the excavator.
  • The cap seals one end of the barrel while also allowing the passage of hydraulic fluid into the cylinder.
